July Message from Chuck Barber

IF YOU BUILD IT THEY WILL COME

This misquoted line is spoken by Ray Kinsella, played by Kevin Costner, in the film Field of Dreams, directed by Phil Alden Robinson (1989). While wandering in a corn field, Ray Kinsella hears a strange whisper: “If you build it, he will come.” Build what?

Moose Legionnaire’s, just like Ray Kinsella in this fantasy story there has been a soft and continuous voice over the years whispering to us “If you build it, they will come,” and just as he did, we ask “Build what, who will come.” The answer lies in the Moose Legion Jurisdictional President’s opening remarks at each conferral, “Our mission is to have fun while providing greater service to the Moose Fraternity.”

I know you get tired of hearing HAVE FUN, but let’s face facts, just like Shoeless Joe Jackson and the 1918 White Sox would have had no place to play if Ray Kinsella had not built that field.  Similarly, our Moose Legionnaires will have no place to bring their families if we don’t build fun activities and celebrations for them.

I remind you Jurisdictional Chaplains that, as Chairman of the Publicity and Member Relations Committee, you are responsible for bringing together a committee to provide Fun and Frolic for our members and their families. If you put some time and effort into this committee’s job to provide fun, then soon your members will be sounding just like Shoeless Joe when Ray Kinsella asked him where all those players came from:

Shoeless Joe Jackson: Where did WE come from? You wouldn’t believe how many guys wanted to play here. We had to beat ’em off with a stick.

So, remember “If you build it, they will come” and if you maintain it, they will stay!

Fraternally,
Charles Barber IMLC
