MOOSE CHARITIES
Forward in the Good, Onward in the Right
ENDOWMENTS: Do You
Know What Your Gift is Doing?
Ensuring Your Gift is Put to the Purpose You Intended
By JILL KENNEDY
Deputy Director of Philanthropy, Moose Charities

> Many donors designate that they would like their funds directed to “an endowment” at Moose Charities. The concept of endowments can be confusing. We at Moose Charities would like to explain what endowment means.
Example: A check is sent to Moose Charities for a donation and “Endowment” is written on the memo line. What happens next?
This dollar amount contributed--in our case, the Mooseheart and/or Moosehaven Endowment Fund--is kept by the organization. The original gift amount is not spent. This is made possible by putting the gift into an endowment account and investing pooled money. Over time, this account earns interest. For budgeting purposes, Moose Charities uses 8% as an estimate of annual interest. The interest earned by a donor’s gift is then used by our organization to support the missions of Mooseheart and Moosehaven. Unlike gifts received for immediate use, endowed gifts keep giving over time.
Decisions must be made regarding the endowment investments. Prudent choices are made to ensure the 8% estimated annual return. This is the duty of the Investment Committee. At present, the Investment Committee consists of the following members: William Airey (Director General), Leonard Solfa (Chief Operating Officer), Joe Mech (Chief Financial Officer), David Chambers (General Governor), Charlie Palochko (Director of Purchasing) and Darrell O’Brien (Director of Membership). This committee meets eight times per year and determines which investments will generate prudent returns on the funds entrusted to the endowment pool.
The Moose Foundation, Inc. board is set up to make decisions regarding the distribution of the monies generated by the investments and paid out via interest. Members of the 2005-2006 Foundation Board are: Robert Elliott, President; Harold “Ray” Lewis, Vice-President; Chris Perry, Secretary; Don Eisel, Director; Eugene Smith, Director; and Thomas Hatcher, Director. This Board is advised by quarterly updates from Moose International CFO Joe Mech. Once a year, during International Convention, this Board meets in person to make decisions. There are three specific Endowment Funds for distribution of monies accumulated through the interest of the endowment investments.
- Mooseheart Endowment funds pooled in this source are invested for use specifically at
Mooseheart.
- Moosehaven Endowment similarly, funds collected
for this fund are used only for Moosehaven.
- Mooseheart-Moosehaven Endowment monies designated for this entity are invested, and the interest is then used for whichever entity is in need of support
at the time of distribution of funds.
If you would like further explanations or assistance with any gift-related questions, please do not hesitate to call. No question is unimportant. We are knowledgeable and here to help.
Moose Charities receives many checks that request “Endowment” allocation. If you have ever sent a check for this purpose, if your Lodge or Chapter has ever been instructed to designate “Endowment”, or if you belong to the “Endowment Fund Club” you’ll find the information above interesting. Many people are overwhelmed by complex financial information, but at Moose Charities, we believe that knowledge is power. Pass it on!
