Letters:

He Rips Change from ‘Communist’ Prohibition to ‘Terrorist/Subversive’

Editor’s note: One amendment to the fraternity’s General Laws, approved at the Charlotte Convention, replaced the longstanding prohibition against Communist Party members in the Moose, with a rejection of any candidate from any “terrorist group” or “recognized subversive organization.” One member’s reaction:

> Dropping the prohibition of Communists in the Moose? Are we so hard up for members, so hell-bent to be politically correct, that you think we need to invite Communists to join? We have members who’ve lost family fighting Communism. If someone at Mooseheart wants Commies in so bad I will chip in to buy them a ticket to China so they can try to start a Lodge.

General Governor David Chambers responds: The terms “terrorist group” and “recognized subversive organization” are greatly more comprehensive and relevant in today’s world. I believe you would contend that the Communist Party is a subversive organization. You have misconstrued the amendment if you believe it constitutes an “invitation” for Communists to join the Order.

More on Hats in the Lodge

> After reading all the letters relating to hats, smokers, lack of participation, etc., I remembered my father, a Moose for 30 years, a Fellow and very involved. After his death I was given his personalized name tag off his Moose Legion vest. Under his name, it reads: “Quitchurbitchin.” This seems apt in this time of dwindling numbers and funds; most of these complaints are “much ado about nothing.”

In my Lodge, the Governor sets the example on acceptable dress. He has accepted the responsibility of leading our Lodge, rather than preside over a splintered, bickering bunch of people who want it all “their way.”

Rambler B-Ball Memories

> On the article on Mooseheart’s great 2003-04 basketball season (May/June/July issue): You wrote briefly but knowledgably about the 1931-32 team’s longstanding record (26-1). Did you think those old guys are all dead and gone? Not so! I know of two at least who are still with us: Earle Guinn ’32 and Charles “Shep” Shepherdson ’34.
