Hurricanes Damage: Not BadUntil Jeanne
Frances not bad, but Jeanne worse; trees down; some roof/window leaks; lost canopy

This view of the St. Johns Rivers west bank fronting Moosehaven clearly shows the amount of shoreline erosion churned up by Hurricane Jeanne on Sept. 26. Several small palmettoes that had survived Charley, Frances and Ivan were lost to Jeanne. Frances had struck Moosehaven with 65-mph winds on Sept. 5-6, but three weeks later, Jeannes winds were clocked as high as 75 mph.

This view of an uprooted oak gives an idea of how softened the ground had become in the wake of several hard rains that preceded the visit of Hurricane Frances.
> In the days following Hurricanes Charley, Frances, Ivan and Jeanne early this fall, many members called to ask about damage they did to the Moosehaven campus in Floridas northeast edge.
The answer, fortunately, is not too much, but certainly enoughthough not as bad as Lodge facilities and homes of numerous members in Florida and elsewhere on the Gulf Coast. Other than several large trees felled, major problems from Frances and Jeanne involved moisture being driven under leaks and through dislodged roof and window seals, causing significant interior water damage. On Sept. 26, Jeanne caused cracking and shifting in the St. Johns River fishing pier and completely removed the sidewalk canopy from the south side entrance to the Michigan Recreation Building.

Part of a large oak landed on the garage of the Old Dominion Residencethe home of Moosehavens director. It caused minor damage to the roof and eave, but Faye Stevens and her husband werent forced to vacate the structure.

Jeannes 12-foot storm surge caused some shifting and cracking in the campus fishing pier, which extends 400 feet into the St. Johns River.

And this, not from any hurricane: a June 26 downburst-type tornado in the Jacksonville area took the top off Moosehavens water tower. No one was hurt; no other structure was hit. Hurricane Frances did no further damage to the towerbut did blow off much of its black paint.

A First for the Ritualists of Opportunity Lodge
Moosehaven staffaverage age 79competes at International Convention, thanks to Georgia Moose Association
> For the first time in nearly 60 years of the fraternitys International Ritual Competition, never had a team been entered from Moosehavens Opportunity Lodgeuntil 2004 in Charlotte.
Moosehaven has had a functioning Ritual staff for decades, but early this year, the staff decided to take the plunge into competition. With plenty of practice, they placed well enough in state competition in April to earn a trip to International competitionbut how to fund the trip? Georgia Moose Association leaders learned of the problem and offered a very generous $4,000 donation, enough to cover the trip costs.
Once in Charlotte, Ritual Prelate Joe Armendinger fell ill and had to spend the night before competition in a hospital. He competed the next day anyway, performing well.
Placing 56th among 65 teams, the staff consisted of Governor Raymond Hall, Prelate Armendinger, Sgt.-at-Arms Fergie Ferguson, Jr. Governor Jack Williford, Orator Bill Moore, and Past Governor Chauncey Christie. |

Talented Resident Gives Painting to Campus
> Jacqueline Bramblett, who moved from Kingsport, TN to Moosehaven last March, has been an enthusiastic and talented user of the art studio in the California/Nevada Activities Center. Her work in oil includes this rendering of a stained-glass window in the New York Chapel. She formally donated her work to Moosehaven July 1; it now hangs in the Administration Building.
