Capes Named
New Executive Director

Experienced Senior-Care Administrator Chosen From Field of 49

> The Board of Directors of the Moosehaven retirement community has named John Capes, an experienced administrator of multiple senior care facilities in several states, as Moosehaven's new Executive Director, effective Monday, April 16.

Capes takes Moosehaven’s helm from Ross Fleet, who had served as Executive Director from 1987 to 2001; Fleet had agreed to return from retirement on an interim basis after the 2006 departure of Faye Stevens.

Capes, 57, comes to Moosehaven from Lincoln, IL-based Christian Homes Inc., where he has served as Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer since 2005. He had previously served as an operations vice president both at Eden Prairie, MN-based American Baptist Homes of the Midwest, and at United Methodist Homes of New Jersey.

Over his nearly two decades in senior-care-community administration, Capes has also served in executive capacities for facilities in Pennsylvania and Michigan.

Most recently, with Christian Homes, Capes has supervised operations of 15 separate Continuing Care Retirement Centers (CCRCs) in four states, with an annual operating budget of $115 million. He is well-versed in the day-to-day administration of services in skilled nursing, assisted living and senior independent living, plus supervision of quality assurance, environmental services and dining services in senior-care commu nities.

“John Capes has a truly outstanding background as an administrator in all fields of senior services,” said Director General William B. Airey. “His record is one of operating senior communities with care and compassion, as well as with efficiency and fiscal prudence. His friendly and down-to-earth demeanor make him a leader whom our Moose-haven seniors will welcome with open arms.” Said Leonard J. Solfa Jr.,

Moose International's Chief Operating Officer, to whom Capes will report: “We're convinced that John Capes's depth and range of experience make him the ideal leader to develop Moosehaven into the best community it can become over the next several years.”

Capes, who was selected from a field of 49 candidates, holds a master's degree in business administration from Michigan State University in East Lansing, and a bache lor's degree in psychology from Rockford (IL) College.

He and his wife, Tina, were to move into the Executive Director’s residence on the Moosehaven campus in early April.

Renovation of LifeCare Center’s Ohio ‘C-Wing’ Reaches Completion

The newly-renovated “C-Wing” at the Paul P. Schmitz Health Center.

> Nearly two years of renovation work have recently concluded on Moosehaven’s LifeCare Center 30,000 square foot “C-Wing”--the remaining original portion of the 1967 Paul P. Schmitz Health Center.

The project was a gift from the Ohio State Moose Association, which made a $10 million commitment to fund not only the $5 million renovation work but selected campus operating expenses as well.

The C-Wing now can provide “transitional living” suites for seniors whose needs keep them from fully-independent living but have yet to reach a point where assisted living or nursing care are needed.

Each of the C-Wing’s 30 fully-furnished suites contains a private bath.

“We have the capability of providing either independent living or assisted living, depending on the need would be for our residents,” said interim Executive Director Ross Fleet.

The timetable for occupancy of the renovated wing is uncertain, Fleet said. He said the wing is currently furnished and has hosted visitors to Moosehaven. Full-time occupancy will likely begin later this year but progress on a comprehensive campus plan will determine both when occupancy begins and the precise use of the suites.

The Schmitz Health Center opened in 1967; the much-enlarged LifeCare complex opened in 2002.

Ohio State Moose Association members helped kick off “C-Wing” renovation work in April 2005. Moose men and women of the Buckeye State have made a $10 million commitment to the project.
