Cultural Awareness Week Highlighted by Olympic Style Games

> Mooseheart students spent a day during mid-February’s Cultural Awareness Week in various good-natured “competitions” between teams representing 10 countries.

After working together in the morning making their “national” shirts, the teams (including Argentina) made enthusiastic entrances into the Fieldhouse during the assembly/competition.

Students dig into a buffet of foods from the 10 countries the students represented, ranging from chicken Tandoori from India, to cannoli from Italy.

Cultural Awareness ‘Olympics’ End With Surprise Event

First-grader Eric Bull gets a lift from high-schoolers Katie Morones, Rhiannon Bishir and Gaven Sallie after they learned they were the winners of the Cultural Awareness Week ‘Olympics’. The team, which represented Brazil, accumulated the most points throughout the afternoon.

Teachers Aidas Skroudys, Dottie Williams and Steve Schmidt were among the faculty members called on to retrieve a piece of bubblegum from pie containers filled with whipped cream--then to blow the biggest bubble!

A triumphant Dianne Raymond was judged the winner of the event.

Students enjoyed watching teachers and staff embarrass themselves in the final event--a surprise to students (and staff!). It featured teams having to choose one of their advisors to represent them in a messy-but-fun competition.

Jesse White Tumblers Dazzle Students with Gymnastic Moves

Jesse White Tumblers

> Cultural Awareness Week finished on an exciting note with the world famous Jesse White Tumblers paying a visit to Kay Cancie Gym. The group was formed by Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White years ago as a positive outlet for students living in Chicago’s low-income neighborhoods. The tumblers amazed the students with their flips and other acrobatics.

‘Anchors Around the World’: Military Ball Celebrates Campus’ NJROTC Tradition

> The annual Naval Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (NJROTC) Military Ball was held Friday, March 17 at the Paul J. O’Hollaren Centre on the Mooseheart campus. The hall was transformed with a huge watercraft to fit with the “Anchors Around the World” theme chosen by students.

Sophomores Jacob Stegeman and Ruthfee Kollie enter the ball in grand style between an honor guard with sabers extended.

Georgia Moose Assn. Donates 31 Laptops for Mooseheart’s Use

> Representatives of the Georgia Moose Association visited Mooseheart Child City & School in early March with 31 IBM laptop computers for use by Mooseheart students and staff--a gift engineered by GMA District 1 President Kevin Bowersox.

Students trying out the equipment were (from left) Abraham Mazon, Brandi Noel and Bryan Carter. Standing with Mooseheart Supt. of Education Gary Urwiler (second from right) are Georgia Moose Association officers Dan Pettis, Walter Zurowski and Gary Riley.
