Scouts Band Together to Raise Money for Tsunami Disaster Victims

Salisbury, MD, Lodge 654
> Cub Scout Pack 478, and Boy Scout Troop 478, both chartered by Salisbury, MD Lodge 654, raised $1,170 for the Red Cross earmarked for victims of the Dec. 26 Asian tsunami disaster. Days after the tsunami appeared on network news coverage, the Scouts noticed that there hadn’t yet been any local effort to help the victims. On Jan. 2, just one week after the tsunami occurred, the Scouts of Pack and Troop 478 marched out to various storefronts in the city, armed with clearly marked Red Cross cans to collect donations from customers. The Scouts were able to collect $1,000 within just three hours. Money continued to be gathered through cans placed in local restaurants.

> Peninsula, AK Lodge 1942/Chapter 1120 Governor Gary Dixon (left) presented a check totalling $5,279 to the local owner of Trustworthy Hardware for the wholesale costs of of 159 Leatherman knives. The knives were bought for a project named “the Alaskan Soldier Hometown Fund.” The fund was a solution when Lodge members decided to do something for the 150 Alaska National Guard Soldiers from Alpha Company, 3rd Scout Battalion, 297th Infantry that were soon to be deployed to Iraq. Members decided that a practical gift would be knives, because they are needed in the field. The Lodge and community of Kenai Peninsula raised the money in a few weeks and shipped out the knives with the engraving “Alaska Supports You.” |
