Welcoming Home the Troops in Clinton, IA

Moose Lodge 363 Leads Other Locals in Greeting Returning GIs

Members of the Clinton, IA, Lodge 363 Patriot Guard Riders lined up last Nov. 4 to greet a returning unit of U.S. Navy Seabees. The unit had been stationed in Iraq.

> Clinton, IA Lodge 363 gave a group of 26 U.S. Navy Seabees returning from Iraq an enthusiastic “welcome home” on Nov. 4.

The Seabees, from Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 25, were first escorted to the Moose Lodge by members of the Lodge’s Patriot Guard Riders, who then formed a color guard with a row of U.S. flags.

Lodge members joined with the Clinton-area public to welcome back the troops, who posed for photos at the end of an afternoon filled with food and camaraderie.

In addition to the Patriot Guard Riders, local Amvets Post 28 sent its color guard to the event to welcome home the troops.

The soldiers enjoyed lunch at the Lodge, which then held raffles to raise money in honor of two members of the unit who died overseas. At afternoon’s end, all money raised in the raffles was presented to the families of the two fallen soldiers.

Huntsville, AL Lodge, Chapter Give 1,500 Lbs. of Food to Mission

Members of both Lodge and Chapter pose with some of the donated foodstuffs.

> In response to a need in their community, Huntsville, AL Lodge 1007 and Chapter 1255 recently held a “Can-A-Thon,” in which members of the lodge and chapter donated as much food as they could in order to aid the Downtown Rescue Mission in Huntsville. The Lodge and Chapter had fun while helping people in its community by organizing the Can-A-Thon as a contest to see which could donate the greatest weight in food. Ultimately everyone won, as over 1,500 pounds of food was donated to the rescue mission. But in terms of the contest, the Lodge finished ahead of the Chapter.

Community Service Comes Naturally to 5-Yr.-Old Adam Colby!

Adam is pictured with the presents he purchased to be delivered to Mississippi.

> Adam Colby may only be five years old, but he already has the spirit of community service that typifies Moose members.

And why not? Adam’s grandfather is Jim Colby of Ann Arbor, MI Lodge 1253, who is the Chairman of the International Community Service Committee.

Adam’s father, Tom, is a member of Milan, MI Lodge 335 and his mother, Teri, is a member of Milan Chapter 1087.

So it really should come as no surprise that, when Adam heard, more than a year ago, about a fundraiser to collect quarters for people in need following Hurricane Katrina, he collected $47 for the Red Cross.

This year, Adam heard about a boy in Mississippi who was going to have a rough Christmas as there wasn’t money to buy presents.

Adam ran a Kool-Aid stand and a bake sale at Lodge 335 and raised $49 to make sure the boy in Mississippi had presents under his Christmas tree this year.

> The Ohio State Moose Association hosted its 18th annual Trap Shooting Benefit last May. The event raised $425 for Moosehaven recreation projects and to benefit the children of the Hoover family in Tiffin, OH, whose mother died last spring after a sudden illness. > It’s been a very good year of fundraising for the members of Griffin, GA Lodge 1503. And they say they had fun all along the way! The Lodge raised and donated $10,300 from 2005-2006 from activities such as raffles, donations and a male “beauty contest”. Members of the Lodge’s Legion Activities Committee include, from left, Legion Secretary Charlie Harwell, Past Governor Bob Daniel, Legion Chairman Richard Oglesby, Governor Arnett Dawson and Administrator James Redmon.

Clare, MI 2268 Helps Build Playground

> Clare, MI recently inaugurated its Imagination Gateway playground, and Lodge 2268 made a massive contribution to the effort. The Lodge coordinated design and development of the park with the local Parks and Recreation Department. The park, built in September, saw contributions by 30 Moose members, who contributed over 1,000 hours of work on the project. Designed by area schoolchildren, the $85,000 park was built with the help of 1,400 total volunteers. Lodge 2268 provided dinner for the workers on one evening of the project. The park was built in one week of dawn-to-dusk work. The project is the largest ever undertaken by the Lodge.

> Members of Claymont, DE Lodge 847 feel children can benefit from being involved in sporting activities, and they helped provide that a year ago when they sponsored a youth bowling league, the first of its kind in the state. At the end of six weeks of bowling, the children were given a banquet. The children participated in quizzes, solved riddles and received trophies for their efforts. Lodge 847 intends to make the league an annual happening.

Food at the banquet included a cake shaped like a bowling alley.

Pictured with Doering and Sweetman is Governor Jerry Sirbaugh. Doering is a member of Boy Scout Troop 178.

Tommy Moose, along with his pal Donny Moose, are given to children in traumatic situations by police officers, fire fighters and medical emergency personnel--but only when those public safety officials have been provided them by Moose Lodges and Chapters!

Moose-Sponsored Scout Reaches Eagle
From left, Jr. Past Governor Allen Beckler, Deputy Supreme Governor Terry Gilbertson, Governor Neil Frey and Administrator Robert Nehls join Uhrich to celebrate his achievement.

> Aberdeen, SD Lodge 590 notes that too many people in town did not know they were the charter partner of Boy Scout Troop 590. That is beginning to change thanks to the achievement of troop member Wade Uhrich, who achieved the rank of Eagle Scout last April. Uhrich was honored in a ceremony at the Aberdeen Moose Center in June.
