‘Moose Generator’ to the Rescue!

Flashing plastic reflector--a Moose campaign promo piece from ’97--made all the difference on a stormy night in northern-CA mountains

> Remember that flashing “Moose Generator” reflector that promoted the “generating” of Moose members a few years ago? I hadn’t remembered where I’d put mine, until one very rainy night.

With the weather turning violent--winds, rain and lightning--we decided to leave the Anderson, CA Moose Family Center 509 early for our 27-mile drive home. In a few miles the storm got even worse; sheets of rain. Being in a rural area, the absence of streetlights made it even darker.

Then things got even worse: Our vehicle stalled, with electrical problems. Driving slowly in the storm, I was barely able to get to the side of the road. Now, sleet was coming down. With no cell phone, no homes in the area, miles to walk and little to no traffic, we decided to wait. I realized that with the car half in the road, I was a hazard to others. As I fumbled for my flashlight in the dark, I came upon the “Moose Generator” reflector in my console.

How long it had been there, I had no idea--at least a few years. I wasn’t sure it still worked. But I pushed the button on its back, and sure enough, it began flashing. So I got out of the car with my flashing “Moose Generator” reflector, to warn any traffic coming from behind.

The fifth or sixth vehicle stopped; the driver asked if she could help. I said, “You sure can”--and gave her the phone number of the Anderson Moose. She assured us she would make the call upon her arrival home.

Just 20 minutes later, our friends arrived to our rescue!

Having fellow Moose members who would venture out on such a bad night to aid others speaks for itself. But we now will always carry a high-tech flashlight, a cell phone--and our flashing Moose Generator reflector! It was an eye-catching membership-promotion tool, but it also surely came to the rescue of Moose members in trouble!

The flashing “Moose Generator” button, given away at the 1997 International Convention to promote a membership program, was crucial in rescuing a member stranded roadside in a storm.
