Ward Reed

> Moosehaven resident Ward Reed celebrated his 100th birthday on Nov. 5 surrounded by family and friends. Reed, sponsored by South Bend, IN Lodge 58, received star treatment on his special day at the City of Contentment.

> But Ward Reed wasn’t the only resident celebrating a long life at Moosehaven last fall. Mable Hill celebrated her 102nd birthday Dec. 10. Hill has lived quite a life--the most recent 25 years of which have been at Moosehaven. Hill was born in Danville, VA. Her father was in the grocery business and died at age 56. Her mother was a manager in the Singer Sewing Machine Company and died at the age of 38. She and her husband Abner Hill were married June 25, 1924. They adopted a son, Wendell, now deceased. Abner joined the Moose in 1951. He died in late 1972. Mable retired as an office manager of a hardware store in June 1966. Her hobbies were letter-writing, travel, and bird-watching. She came to Moosehaven Aug. 27, 1981, living in Empire Hall until moving to Schmitz Health and Wellness Center in early 1991. Less than a month after her 102nd birthday--on Jan. 5, 2006--Mable died quietly at the LifeCare Center.
