Local School and Brandon, FL Lodge 1880: Partnership Flies to New Heights Every Spring

George Chavez and some of his enthusiastic kite builders.

> George Chavez, along with the help of his wife Ruth, from Brandon, FL Lodge 1880/Chapter 159, are becoming legendary among the students of Dover Elementary School for annual kite-building classes every spring—now in their 16th year. Students eagerly look forward to learning how to make and fly kites. Included is study of proper measurement, symmetry, weather conditions and friction. The Lodge and Chapter have received great publicity; George was even presented an award by the School Board. Supplies are provided by the Moose Legion; the Chavezes do the rest.

> Dayton, OH Lodge 73/Chapter 9 raised more than $260 during a local radio station’s “Miracle Marathon” to benefit the Dayton Children’s Medical Center. In fun tongue-in-cheek fashion, Chelsie Farish (related to Chapter Recorder Anita Farish) acts as a “change bandit” and demands cash from Lodge Governor Ron Snyder.

> A local television station and Wendy’s restaurants in Zanesville, OH sponsored a program called “Lace Up for Kids,” in which donations of shoes were taken for needy children headed back to school. Lodge 867/Chapter 663 members thoughtfully noted that children need socks to go along with their new shoes—and donated 250 pairs of socks to the shoe drive.

Feels Like Home. . .

> Red Deer, AB Lodge 1639/Chapter 1460 and the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre have worked together since 1993, when the Lodge funded the “Moose Cottage” room, where patients and visitors are treated at no cost to beverages, homemade baking and kindness by volunteers. Last year, the hospital celebrated its 100th anniversary and underwent a redevelopment project. The “Cottage” had to relocate, and plans were made to allocate space on the third level of the regional building. Moose members donated the funds needed for the space and the new, updated cottage opened in July 2003. At left above, a beautiful window with an etched Moose separating the food-preparation area from visitors.

Women of the Moose staffer Delvera Teske signs the guest book while Lodge Administrator Gene Stebner and Mrs. Teske’s husband, Assistant Director/Member Relations Del Teske, enjoy some coffee in the “Cottage”.
