Down-Home Lessons from ‘Fuddwhacker’ Leave Delegates Smiling, Energized

“Buford P. Fuddwhacker” recruited Director General Ross, Grand Regent Waneta Tyler, and Supreme Councilman G.W. McCullough III to participate in a Positive Attitude Modeling Contest.

> To be honest, neither Moose members nor staff in attendance much knew what to expect Tuesday afternoon when the turn came on the agenda for “Buford P. Fuddwhacker.” All anyone knew was that he was a guy who was to appear wearing an exaggerated “nerd/hayseed”-type outfit.

Forty minutes later, nearly 4,000 Moose men and women carried huge smiles on their faces and hugely improved attitudes; “Buford” was a huge hit. Dispensing hilarious, down-home-Hoosier wisdom amid role-playing and much audience participation, “Fuddwhacker” (a.k.a. “corporate escapee” Roger Reece) gave members three points to ponder, supported in music and whimsical PowerPoint. First: “put a hound dog out of its misery” and create in ourselves a positive, upbeat attitude; second: if a colleague is stubborn or negative, “go around the mule”; and third: “Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth,” meaning in this context that we should learn to value everyone’s contributions. Afterward, “What a great session!” was heard more than once.

Self-described “corporate escapeee” Roger Reece came out of his “Buford” persona briefly at the end of his presentation.

The Director General proved a willing devotee of the philosophy that a positive attitude is contagious—with the enthusiastic support of Moose men and women in attendance.
