Community Service:

‘KidsTalk’ Presenters Showcase Talents

> Assistant Director of Community Service Jim Morgan dedicated the final portion of his Community Service report to three outstanding young women, for whom the “KidsTalks” of the Moose Youth Awareness Program have provided an outlet for their creativity and concern for young children.

Jamie Houston of Kentucky has taught more than 900 four- through nine-year-olds about water safety through her “KidsTalks.” Jennica Kinney of Oklahoma, who had wowed a crowd with her singing two days before at the “Higher-Degree Wingding,” told children about the dangers of smoking during her “KidsTalk.”

Kathy Berger, from Illinois, the winner of the top $7,000 scholarship, developed a professional-quality DVD for children on “Stranger Danger.” Berger (with help from family and Moose friends) designed, dressed, posed and photographed puppets to teach children valuable lessons. Berger, who gave 20 presentations to 540 children, dedicated a tremendous amount of time to the project. For example, some of the scenes in the DVD that last only three seconds, took up to 15 minutes merely to set up.

Kathy Berger of Illinois earned her $7,000 Moose Youth Awareness scholarship with a highly creative, professional-grade DVD she wrote and produced on a “Stranger Danger” theme— effectively communicating a safety theme to very young children, ages 4 to 9. It featured clear, compelling, lighthearted demonstrations on how youngsters should be careful in conversations with adults they don’t know.

Morgan reported the total value of 2003-04 Moose Community Service at $93,826,193.63 from Moose men and women combined.
