The Women of the Moose have been quietly doing charitable work in Nanaimo for almost 95 years. From supporting seniors with dementia to contributing to the Special Olympics, the group works diligently throughout the year to benefit those in need around the globe, but also locally. When the Women of the Moose read a recent newspaper article about the Nanaimo & District Hospital Foundation's effort to raise $1.5 million to equip two new operating rooms at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital (NRGH) they were quick to step forward and help.
On Monday May 5th, they delivered a $5,000 donation to Operating Room Manager, Suzie Vinden. The funds will buy needed equipment to complete two new O.R.s, scheduled to open later this year. The Women of the Moose Chapter 197 is a "family fraternity" run by 186 volunteers who raise funds through catering and hall rentals, garage sales, and Wednesday Seniors' Lunches. In deciding to support the new operating rooms Campaign, Wendy McKinley, Chapter Recorder and 50 year veteran of the Women of the Moose, explained, "This is a good cause and it will make a difference to many people in our community."
