Airey Names Greene To Succeed Chambers As General Governor
PSG from South Carolina served as fraternity’s chief presiding officer in 1998-99

> The Moose organization’s new General Governor is a man familiar throughout the fraternity, after having served it on the International level for 22 years -- one of those years as its Supreme Governor. Steven F. Greene, PSG, began his duties as the fraternity’s tenth General Governor on Sept. 15. His appointment by Director General William B. Airey was unanimously approved by the Supreme Council--Moose International’s corporate board of directors--in a telephone conference meeting Aug. 14.
The office of General Governor is responsible for all matters regarding interpretation of and compliance with the fraternity’s Constitution and General Laws by members, Lodges, Chapters and Moose Legions. He is further charged with enforcement of policies mandated by the Supreme Council, and approval of all dispensations required by the General Laws.
As General Governor, Greene succeeds David A. Chambers, who resigned the office in late May after having served since April 1996. (Throughout this summer, Jerry O’Connor, who had retired as Assistant General Governor earlier in the year, has been at Moose International headquarters fulfilling the responsibilities of the office on an interim basis.)
Greene, who served the fraternity as Supreme Governor during the 1998-99 Moose year, was serving most recently (since June 2007) as Chairman of the Moosehaven Board of Directors, after having chaired the Moose Charities Board since 2002.
“The service and leadership that Steve Greene has provided to this fraternity has been steady and rock-solid, during some very challenging times,” Director General Airey said. “He is calm and reasoned, his integrity is without question, his knowledge of this Order and its members is extensive, and he is thoroughly respected all over the fraternity. All of this makes him an ideal candidate to serve as General Governor, and we’re very fortunate that he’s agreed to do so.” Greene, 60, is a retired funeral director and independent businessman who joined the Moose at Rock Hill, SC Lodge 1720 in 1973. He is a Past Governor of that Lodge, and a Past President of the South Carolina Moose Association. He joined Palmetto Moose Legion 86 in 1974 and is a Past President of that unit. He received the Fellowship Degree of Honor in 1979 and the Pilgrim Degree of Merit in 1985, and is a member of the Century Division of the Moose 25 Club.
Greene’s Moose service on the International level began in 1985 on the former Endowment Fund Board. In 1989 at the relatively young age of 42, he was named by Director General Paul O’Hollaren to serve on the Supreme Council. He rose to Supreme Prelate in 1996 and Supreme Jr. Governor in 1997. He was elected Supreme Governor at the 1998 International Convention in Toronto.
Greene and his wife Rebekah have three grown children and three grandchildren.
