Fund ‘Gimme Five’ By Forgoing 1 Cigarette a Day, Member Suggests
> I think the “Gimme Five” goal (cover story, Nov/Dec/Jan issue) is outstanding and I plan to participate. However, I think the write-up in Moose Magazine missed an important opportunity. I would have added the suggestion that smokers consider financing their contributions by giving up one cigarette a day. I’m no longer a smoker; gave it up on the plane back from Vietnam. So I don’t know the current price of a cigarette but would guess that most are more than two nickels apiece (editor’s note: in most of the U.S., cigarettes retail for 15 cents apiece or more). Moose smokers could save more than they donate, feel good about cutting back, reduce the adverse health impact on themselves and their families, and possibly gain the confidence to quit altogether. A main reason I don’t participate more in Moose activities is that I recognize ill effects of secondhand smoke and Lodges are not smoke-free; however, I still maintain my membership because of the good works that the organization performs.

Editor’s note: A letter in Nov/Dec/Jan issue from a 32-year-old Chapter member noted that while “the story of the Moose is relevant to many younger people...when older members want to do everything the same way they did it 30 years ago, you can’t keep younger members involved. And if older members cuss and scowl at the children every time they enter the Lodge home, families won’t be back.” The writer here takes issue with these views:
I find this letter personally offensive. Perhaps her Lodge and Chapter are composed of ill-spoken clods. She doesn’t say what city or state she speaks of or what children’s activities are held. It has been my experience that those with fresh ideas, whether they be young or old, are sometimes met with opposition. Most members with sincere family values don’t bring their children to places where cussing and other obnoxious behavior is condoned by young or old. I don’t approve of underage children being allowed to remain in any establishment after the dinner hour where liquor is being served.
In order for any organization to be successful, you need the wisdom and experience of older members and the new ideas of the younger ones. I am 71.
